Welcome to Attraction Checklist.

This episode we head to Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World and ride one of the park’s iconic attractions, The Haunted Mansion.

Located in Liberty Square, The Haunted Mansion is described in the guide map in the following manner: Take a spine tingling tour of this dark, haunted estate.  There are no height or age requirements for this attraction and FastPass+ is available.  The thrill level is describes The Haunted Mansion as being a Dark Ride and Slow Ride.

Before we hitch hike a doom buggy to the spirit world, here are five fast facts about The Haunted Mansion at Walt Disney World.

1.  The Haunted Mansion is an opening day attraction at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World and marks it’s 45th year of operation in 2016.

2.  While sharing very similar scenes to it’s California counterpart, the Haunted Mansion in Florida has a few extra scenes that required extra narration by the Ghost Host, voiced by the legendary Paul Frees.

3.  In 2007, the attraction received a major refurbishment which added several new elements including the ‘M.C. Esher-esqu’ staircase room, a floating cruystal ball for Madame Leota, and the addition of Constanse Hathaway, the Black Widow Bride in the attic scene.

4.  In 2011, the ride received a new queue area where guests can interact with various tombstones and even talk back to the spirits.  That same year, the ride received a major upgrade in the Hitchhiking Ghosts sequence where the three ghosts now appear to physically interact with guests as they near the end of the attraction.

5.  One of the iconic scenes of the Haunted Mansion is the stretching room sequence.  At Disneyland in California, the floor of the Stretching Room lowers, serving as an elevator to bring guests underground to board the attraction.  At Walt Disney World, where they had more space to build the attraction, an elevator was not needed, so the ceiling rises to create the illusion of the room stretching.

Now, let’s bravely head to the Magic Kingdom’s to meet the 999 ghostly occupants of the Haunted Mansion.  After the ride audio, I’ii share my thoughts on the attraction and I’d love to hear YOUR thoughts on it as well over at the  Attraction Checklist Facebook page at facebook.com/attractionchecklist..  This is a binaural recording, so if you have headphones put them on now because we are about to experience, the Magic Kingdom’s Haunted Mansion.

INTRO TRANSCRIPT

Welcome to Attraction Checklist.

This time we’ve got something every special for you, the return of the Main Street Electrical Parade to Disneyland park!  This audio was recorded on January 19, 2017 as the parade made it’s return to it’s birthplace at a special premiere event.  The parade is currently describe in the guide by saying Catch this classic nighttime parade filled with fanciful floats and toe-tappin’ tunes for a limited time―it fades away June 18, 2017!  As this is a parade, it is open to all ages and there is no height requirement, though if you want to see the parade up front you’ll want to snag a viewing spot along the parade route early.

Before we experience this spectacular festival pagent of nighttime magic and imagination.

1. The Main Street Electrical Parade debuted at Disneyland on June 17, 1972 and it ran at the park until November 25, 1996.

2.  The parade was created to be a West Coast version of the Electrical Water Pageant that has run at Walt Disney World in Florida since October 26, 1971.  The Water Pagent features barges with light up screens depicting a sea serpent, jumping dolphins, a turtle and more.  Instead of traveling down Main Street, these floats travel on barges on the Seven Seas Lagoon.

3.  According to then director of show development  Ronald Miziker, all 500,000 light bulbs in the original parade needed to be hand-tinted which required dipping each on in the appropriate colored paint.

4. The Main Street Electrical parade is known for its iconic music.  The underlying theme is called Baroque Hoedown and was originally created by early synthesizer pioneers Jean-Jaques Perrey and Gershon Kingsley.

5.  The Main Street Electrical parade was the firs tin Disney Park history to use an automated parade show control program that allowed the parade route to have different radio activated zones that allowed for float specific music and sound to be triggered as the floats passed by.  This si a technique still used in Disney parks today.

Now it’s time to sit back and enjoy the return of the Main Street Electrical parade as it returns to Disneyland for the first time in over 20 years.  Watching the parade with me is the man who inspired this very podcast you’re listening to, Window To the Magic’s Paul Barrie and after the parade we will discuss out thoughts on this returning attraction.  Once again, this is a binaural recording so if you have headphones put them in as we enjoy the Main Street Electrical Parade!

INTRO TRANSCRIPT

Welcome to Attraction Checklist.

Today we are going to visit the open house at the Imagination Institute as we ride Journey Into Imagination with Figment located in EPCOT’s future Word west at Walt Disney World in Florida.  The guide map describes this attraction by saying ‘Follow Figment in this whimsical open house tour of the Imagination Institute’.  This is a Dark, slow ride according to the the Thrill Level and it is open to guests of all ages and heights.  Fastness plus is offered.

Before we meet up with Dr. Nigel Channing, here are five fast facts about Journey Into Imagination with Figment.

1. Journey into imagination with Figment opened on June 2, 2002.  This attraction is the third version of the attraction housed in Imagination Pavilion at EPCOT.  The original Journey Into Imagination opened on March 5, 1983.  It closed on October 10, 1998 for renovation and reopened on October 1, 1999 as Journey into Your Imagination which only lasted two years before it was closed on October 8, 2001 to make way for the latest incarnation.

2. For the ride, Eric Idle reprises his role of Dr. Nigel Channing from the Honey, I Shrunk The Kids Franchise.  The original voice of Figment, Billy Barty passed away in 2000 so Dave Goelz was hired to portray the new Figment.  If Dave Goelz’s name isn’t familiar, you certainly know of one of his other alter egos, Gonzo from The Muppets.

3. Journey Into Imagination with Figment marked the return of the Sherman Brother’s song One Little Spark.  This song featured prominently in the original Journey into imagination attraction but was removed for Journey into Your imagination which drew a lot of criticism from fans.

4. There are several references to other Disney movies in this attraction including The Absent Minded Professor, The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes and Honey I Shrunk The Kids.

5. The ride also features some tributes to the classic Journey Into Imagination attraction.  Many animatronics and figures of Figment feature prominently in the ride and the reapperaing/dissapearing butterfly from the original can be seen as well.  There’s also a brief tribute to The Dreamfinder, the ride’s original host.

Now, lets visit the Imagination institute and take a ride on Journey Into Imagination With Figment.  John B. deHaas is along for the ride today and after the ride audio, we’ll discuss our thoughts on this attraction.  This is a binaural recording so if you have headphones, put them on now as we set our imaginations free on EPCOT’S Journey Into Imagination with Figment.

INTRO TRANSCRIPT

On today’s episode, all our Christmas Wishes come true as we experience the A Christmas Fantasy Parade at Disneyland.

A Christmas Fantasy is described in the entertainment guide by saying, “Beloved Disney Characters join Santa Claus for a merry musical celebration that’s heading your way down Main Street, U.S.A.!“  As this is a parade, there are no height age requirements at all.

Before we enjoy this holiday spectacular, here are five fast facts about the Christmas Fantasy Parade.

  1. A Christmas Fantasy Parade debuted at Disneyland on November 13, 1994 replacing the A Very Merry Christmas Parade.
  2. Over the years there have been several versions of the Christmas Fantasy Parade.  Mostly rotating characters who are currently popular into the parade.  For example, Elsa and Anna have currently rotated into the parade.
  3. Characters who have appeared in the parade over the years but are not currently featured include Aladdin, Scrooge McDick, Roget Rabbit and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
  4. Not including Disney characters, there are over 60 performers who bring the parade to life.  These include Santa’s Elve’s, Ballroom dancers and skiers and ice skaters who travel the parade route on skates.  This does not include the toy soldiers, reindeer or snowmen and women as well!
  5. While the parade’s theme song, A Christmas Fantasy, plays during the entire parade route, each parade unit features special music that blends with the main theme as the passes by.

And now let’s experience the A Christmas Fantasy parade at Disneyland.  After the parade audio, I’ll give you my thoughts on this yearly addition to Disneyland and I’d love to hear your thoughts over at the Attraction Checklist Facebook page at facebook.com/attractionchecklist.  Now if you have headphones, put them on now because this is a binaural recording of A Christmas Fantasy.

INTRO TRANSCRIPT

Welcome to Attraction Checklist.

On today’s episode we head in to the Jungle during Christmas as we ride Disneyland’s Jingle Cruise.

Located in Adventureland, the Jingle Cruise is a seasonal overlay of the World Famous Jungle Cruise attraction.  This special holiday version of this attraction is described in the guide map in the following manner:  Come aboard for one ‘wild’ yuletide ride!  This iconic safari boat cruise features hilarious holiday surprises around every turn.  There are no age or height restrictions for this ride and the Thrill Level describes the ride as being Loud, a water ride and a slow ride.

Before we see head out to see the backside of water, here are five fast facts about the Jingle Cruise at Disneyland.

  1. The Jingle Cruise debuted at Disneyland on November 12, 2013.  That year also saw the Jingle Cruise come to the Walt Disney World version of the attraction as well.
  2. The first year of the Jingle Cruise saw very little change to the Jungle itself.  The boats and boathouse were decorated for the holidays but aside from some holiday themed jokes, the jungle remained untouched.  In 2014, the overlay was changed dramatically.  There are very little decorations in the boathouse as now, according to the storyline, the shipment of holiday decorating supplies has been lost in the jungle!  Skippers are taking their crews out into the jungle to find out what happened to the to find the supplies!
  3. Each of the boats receives a temporary new name during the Jingle Cruise Overlay.  Some of the new names include the Navidad Adventuress, Hannukah Hattie and Yuletide Lotus,
  4. During the Jingle Cruise overlay, even the skippers are redecorated!  You’ll see many of them have swapped out their usually Jungle Cruise hats for jungle themed santa clause hats.
  5. The Jingle Cruise is not just a visual overlay.  During one scene on the attraction involving baking supplies, delicious scents are pumped into the air to make the scene complete.

Well, let’s now head out into the jungle and see if we can’t locate the missing supplies.  Suzie is along for the ride today and after the ride audio we’ll give our thoughts on this holiday attraction.  This is a binaural recording so if you have headphones, put them on now as we are about to ride the Jingle Cruise at Disneyland.

Frozen Ever After – EPCOT – Walt Disney World – Attraction Checklist #012

November 21, 2016 | 0 Comments

ac_episode_012smallLet’s celebrate winter in the summer as we ride EPCOT’s newest attraction Frozen Ever After.  Will a die-hard Maelstrom fan enjoy this new ride?  Listen and find out!  We welcome your thoughts over at the Attraction Checklist Facebook Page at http://www.facebook.com/attractionchecklist.  Audio recorded on October 25, 2016, front row of the boat.

INTRO TRANSCRIPT

Welcome to Attraction Checklist.

On today’s episode we visit Elsa in her Ice Palace as we ride Frozen Ever After.

This attraction can be found in the Norway Pavillion in World Showcase at EPCOT in Walt Disney World.  Board a wooden Viking ship and sail through the fantastical world of Frozen is how this attraction is described in the guide map.  The ride is described as a Slow Ride in the Thrill Rating and there are no age or height requirements for this attraction.  Fastpass+ is available for this attraction, as long as you plan months in advance,

Before we visit Arendelle, here are five fast facts about Frozen Ever After.

  1. On September 12, 2014, Disney announced they would be closing the Norway pavilion’s attraction Maelstrom and replacing it with Frozen Ever After.  This decision did not sit well with many EPCOT fans, including myself, but we had to ‘Let It Go’ as the final Maelstrom boat took it’s trip back over the falls on October 5, 2014.
  2. Frozen Ever After uses the same ride vehicles as Maelstrom and uses pretty much the same exact layout except for a little extra track at the beginning of the attraction.
  3. This is the first disney attraction to use electric audio-animatronic figures.  previously, audio animatronics relied on pneumatic or hydraulic power, but Disney claims these new all electric animatronics provide a smoother, more lifelike appearance.
  4. Frozen Ever After features several songs from the film, but some of the songs have brand new lyrics that were written by the original composers.
  5. Even thought Frozen Ever After replaced the quirky, but much loved Maelstrom, there are still small tribute to the original ride in Frozen Ever After.  As guests splash back down into Arendelle Bay at the end of the attraction, they will spot some Puffins who were part of the original Maelstrom attraction.

Let’s head off for our summer snow day as we ride Frozen Ever After.  At the conclusion of the ride audio I’ll give you my thoughts on the attraction dn I’d love to hear YOUR thoughts over at the Attraction Checklist Facebook Page at facebook.com/attractionchecklist.  This is a binaural recording so if you have headphones put them on now as we experience Frozen Ever After.

INTRO TRANSCRIPT

Welcome to Attraction Checklist.

On today’s episode we celebrate the presidents of the past and present by visiting the Hall of Presidents located in Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.

Located in Liberty Square, this 22 minute long attraction is described in the guidebooks in the following manner: Behold all the U.S. Presidents on stage together.  There is no height or age requirements for this attraction

Before we get all patriotic, here are five fast facts about Haunted Mansion Holiday.

  1. The Hall of Presidents was an attraction that was originally developed by Walt Disney himself.  He envisioned an attraction at Disneyland called ‘One Nation Under God that featured animated wax figures of each of the presidents.  Frustrated by the limits of technology at the time, he shelved the idea but pushed his Imagineers to develop an audio animatronic figure in human form which became Abraham Lincoln for Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln.
  2. The first showing of the Hall of Presidents was on October 1, 1971 as it was a Magic Kingdom, opening day attraction.  On that day, the roll call of presidents ended with, then current president, Richard M. Nixon.
  3. After each new president takes office, their figure is added to the Hall of Presidents.  Beginning in 1993 with President Bill Clinton, each president has provided the voice for their audio animatronic figure.  Most recently in 2009, Barack Obama recorded his figure’s speech in the Map room at the White House
  4. The current version of the Hall of Presidents is Narrated by Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman.  Previous narrators include Lawrence Dobkin, J.D. Hall and Maya Angelou
  5. The voice of Abraham Lincoln in the current version of the show is an archive recording performed  by Royal Dano, who provided Lincoln’s voice for the 1965 World’s Fair.  In 1993, when the show was being redon, Dano fell ill and Peter Renaday stepped in to prove Lincoln’s Voice.  No stranger to lending his voice to Disneyland attractions, Peter Renaday is also the voice of Henry, the Master of Ceremonies at the Country Bear Jamboree.

And now let’s visit The Hall of Presidents.  After the attraction Audio, I’ll give you my thoughts on this attraction and I’d love to hear your thoughts over at the Attraction Checklist Facebook page at facebook.com/attractionchecklist.  This is a binaural recording so if you have headphones, put them on now as we experience, the Magic Kingdom’s Hall of Presidents.

Haunted Mansion Holiday – Disneyland – Attraction Checklist #010

October 24, 2016 | 0 Comments

INTRO TRANSCRIPT

Welcome to Attraction Checklist.

On today’s episode we experience the collision of two holidays as we ride Haunted Mansion Holiday at Disneyland.

Located in Liberty Square, the 22 minute long attraction

Before we go celebrate Jack Skellington’s vision of christmas at the Haunted Mansion, here are five fast facts about Haunted Mansion Holiday.

  1. The Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay of Disneylands Haunted Mansion first opened on October 1, 2001.  The popularity of the overlay has continued every year since and typically opens in the fall and remains open through early January so guests can visit during the Halloween and Christmas seasons.
  2. The voice of the Ghost Host in Haunted Mansion Holiday is provided by Corey Burton.  He does an excellent voice match for the original ghost host Paul Frees who passed away in 1986.
  3. Imagineer Leota Tombs who provided the face and voice of Madame Leeota in the Haunted Mansion also needed a replacement as she had passed on in 1991.  The voice of Madame Leota for Haunted Mansion Holiday is provided by actress Susanne Blakeslee.  The face of Madame Leota in the crystal ball is none other than Kim Irvine, Leota Toombs’ daughter who also works as an imagineer at Disney.
  4. A new musical score for the attraction was composed by Gordon Goodwin.  In 2002, an adapted score by John Debney began being used although elements of Goodwin’s original score are still used in various parts of the attraction.
  5. One Haunted Mansion Holiday tradition is every year since the Holiday overlay began, a new themed Gingerbread house has appeared on the dining table in the ballroom of the Mansion made out of real gingerbread!  Some of the creepy houses have reached heights of 15 feet and used over 200 pounds of Gingerbread in their making

Now it’s time to hop a holiday doom buggy and see what presents Jack has brought us.  Along for the ride is Suzie and we’ll discuss our thoughts on Haunted Mansion Holiday after the ride audio.  The audio has been trimmed a little so as to get on the ride faster after the stretching room.  Once again this attraction audio is a binaural recording so if you have headphones put them on now as we experience Haunted Mansion Holiday.

Splash Mountain – Disneyland – Attraction Checklist #008

September 26, 2016 | 0 Comments

AC_EPISODE_008SmallOn this episode of Attraction Checklist we find out Laughing Place as we ride Disneyland’s Splash Mountain.  Before we ride through in glorious binaural audio, we learn a little bit about one of the park’s most popular attractions!  After the ride, I give my thoughts on the attraction and I welcome your thoughts over at the Attraction Checklist Facebook Page.  Ride audio recorded on July 12, 2016, last seat in the log.

INTRO TRANSCRIPT

Welcome to Attraction Checklist.

This episode we ride an attraction that was suggested by a listener over on the Attraction Checklist Facebook page at facebook.com/attractionchecklist.  They wanted us to head over to Critter Country at Disneyland and take a ride on one of the most popular rides in the park, Splash Mountain.

Splash Mountain is described in the guide as follows:  Embark on a rollicking log flume ride featuring characters and songs from the classic Disney film Song of the South.  The attraction is open to all guests 40” or taller.  Fast passes are available and there is a single rider line offered.  The Thrill Level for this attraction is described as being Loud, Dark, and A Water and Thrill Ride.

Before we take our service elevator ride, let’s check out five fast facts about The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.

  1. Construction on Splash Mountain began in April 1987 and the ride officially opened just over two years later on July 17, 1989
  2. In 1988, in anticipation of Splash Mountains opening, the name of the area the attraction is located was changed from Bear Country to Critter Country.  This was not the first name change for that section of the park, however.  From 1956, when Disneyland opened, to 1971 this area of Disneyland was known as the Indian Village.
  3. As much as it pains me to say it, the bulk of the animatronic figures featured in Disneyland’s Splash Mountain were from the Tomorrowland Attraction America Sings.  The story goes that in order to cut costs on the ,already over budget, construction of Splash Mountain, the decision was made to close America Sings, which had seen declining attendance, and reuse the animal animatronics from that attraction on Splash Mountain.
  4. The big drop into the Briar patch at Disneyland’s Splash Mountain is around 52 feet, a height equal to 5 stories!  Logs traveling down the drop can reach speeds of 40 miles per hour!
  5. The riverboat featured at the end of the attraction measures 50 feet wide and 30 feet high making it one of the largest animated props Disney has ever built.

So let’s hop a log to our laughing place and experience SPalsh Mountain at Disneyland.  After the ride audio, I share my thoughts on the attraction and I’d love to hear YOUR thoughts on it as well over at the  Attraction Checklist Facebook page at facebook.com/attractionchecklist..  This is a binaural recording, so if you have headphones put them on now because we are about to experience, Disneyland’s Splash mountain.
