Splash Mountain – Disneyland – Attraction Checklist #008

September 26, 2016 | 0 Comments

AC_EPISODE_008SmallOn this episode of Attraction Checklist we find out Laughing Place as we ride Disneyland’s Splash Mountain.  Before we ride through in glorious binaural audio, we learn a little bit about one of the park’s most popular attractions!  After the ride, I give my thoughts on the attraction and I welcome your thoughts over at the Attraction Checklist Facebook Page.  Ride audio recorded on July 12, 2016, last seat in the log.

INTRO TRANSCRIPT

Welcome to Attraction Checklist.

This episode we ride an attraction that was suggested by a listener over on the Attraction Checklist Facebook page at facebook.com/attractionchecklist.  They wanted us to head over to Critter Country at Disneyland and take a ride on one of the most popular rides in the park, Splash Mountain.

Splash Mountain is described in the guide as follows:  Embark on a rollicking log flume ride featuring characters and songs from the classic Disney film Song of the South.  The attraction is open to all guests 40” or taller.  Fast passes are available and there is a single rider line offered.  The Thrill Level for this attraction is described as being Loud, Dark, and A Water and Thrill Ride.

Before we take our service elevator ride, let’s check out five fast facts about The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.

  1. Construction on Splash Mountain began in April 1987 and the ride officially opened just over two years later on July 17, 1989
  2. In 1988, in anticipation of Splash Mountains opening, the name of the area the attraction is located was changed from Bear Country to Critter Country.  This was not the first name change for that section of the park, however.  From 1956, when Disneyland opened, to 1971 this area of Disneyland was known as the Indian Village.
  3. As much as it pains me to say it, the bulk of the animatronic figures featured in Disneyland’s Splash Mountain were from the Tomorrowland Attraction America Sings.  The story goes that in order to cut costs on the ,already over budget, construction of Splash Mountain, the decision was made to close America Sings, which had seen declining attendance, and reuse the animal animatronics from that attraction on Splash Mountain.
  4. The big drop into the Briar patch at Disneyland’s Splash Mountain is around 52 feet, a height equal to 5 stories!  Logs traveling down the drop can reach speeds of 40 miles per hour!
  5. The riverboat featured at the end of the attraction measures 50 feet wide and 30 feet high making it one of the largest animated props Disney has ever built.

So let’s hop a log to our laughing place and experience SPalsh Mountain at Disneyland.  After the ride audio, I share my thoughts on the attraction and I’d love to hear YOUR thoughts on it as well over at the  Attraction Checklist Facebook page at facebook.com/attractionchecklist..  This is a binaural recording, so if you have headphones put them on now because we are about to experience, Disneyland’s Splash mountain.

INTRO TRANSCRIPT

Welcome to Attraction Checklist.

Located in Pixar Place at Disney Hollywood Studios, The Toy Story Midway Mania attraction is described in the guide map in the following manner:  Ride this midway-style, 4-D shootin’ game starring your favorite Toy Story characters.  There is no height requirement and the only Thrill Level warning is that this is a Spinning attraction.

Before we begin, here are five fast facts about Toy Story Midway Mania:

  1. Toy Story Midway Mania officially opened on May 31, 2008 with two tracks.  Due to the ride’s popularity, a third track was added to the attraction which opened eight years later in May of 2016.  The audio for this episode was recorded on that new third track on one of it’s first days of operation.  Also, there are some name variations with this ride.  On the Walt Disney World website and in the guide maps, the ride is sometimes known only as Toy Story Mania!  However, on the marquee out front of the attraction, it’s listed as Toy story Midway Mania.
  2. Toy Story Midway Mania was the first attraction that Walt Disney Imagineers designed for two parks simultaneously.  Less than a month after the version at Disney Hollywood Studios opened, a second version was opened at Disney California Adventure.
  3. The queue line for the attraction features a huge audio animatronic Mr. Potato head, voiced by comedian Don Rickles, that sings, tells jokes and can even remove and replace his own ear!
  4. The ride is controlled by over 150 computers.  These computers not only track the movement of the ride vehicles, but every single pull of the string of every guests spring action shooter!
  5. Some of the mini games in the attraction were updated in 2010 to coincide with the release of Toy Story 3 adding several new characters to the ride.

So get your spring loaded shooters ready, it’s time to experience Toy Story Midway Mania!  Be sure to stick around after  to hear my thoughts on this attraction and I’d love to hear your thoughts too over at the  Attraction Checklist Facebook page at facebook.com/attractionchecklist.  Also, this is a binaural recording, so if you have headphones, It’s time to test our skills on Toy Story Midway Mania!

Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley To The Rescue! – Disney California Adventure – Attraction Checklist #005

August 8, 2016 | 0 Comments

AC_EPISODE_005SmallLet’s head to Monstroppolis by way of Disney California Adventure and take a ride on Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley To The Rescue!  Along for the ride is musician John B. deHaas who also discusses the ride with me after we make it back to the human world.

INTRO TRANSCRIPT

Welcome to Attraction Checklist,

On this episode, we head to Disney California Adventure to help save Boo on Monster’s Inc: Mike and Sulley to the Rescue

Nestled deep in the Hollywood Land section of the park, this dark ride based on the Monsters Inc film series is described in the guide map in the following manner:  Race through Monstropolis to return Boo to her room.  There is no height requirement on this attraction and the Thrill Level describes the ride as being Loud, Dark and a slow ride.

Before we ride, here are five fast facts about Mike and Sulley to the rescue.

  1. The ride officially opened on January 23, 2006 replacing the much panned and short lived Superstar Limo attraction.  Mike and Sulley to the rescue uses the same track layout and the same ride vehicles which have been redecorated to look like Monstropolis taxi Cabs
  2. John Goodman, Billy Crystal and Steve Buscemi all reprised their roles from the film for the attraction, Goodman voicing SUlley, Crystal voicing Mike and Buscemi voicing Randall.  Other actors from the film provided voices as well.
  3. Each of the Taxi Cab vehicles have different monster related vanity license plates such as SCREMR, FOBYAH and PEEKABOO.
  4. As your taxi cab makes it’s way through Harryhausen’s sushi restaurant (named after special effects pioneer Ray Harryhousen), the smell of ginger is pumped into the air for an added bit of realism.
  5. The end of the ride features an audioanimatronic of the character Roz from Monster’s inc.  She will have some parting words for you before you leave and, very often, those are directed specifically toward one of the riders in the cab.  This makes for a completely different ride each time.

Let’s are ready to explore Monstropolis now and, good news, we aren’t along.  My friend, musician, John B. deHaas is along for the ride.  Be sure to stick around after the listen through to hear our thoughts on this attraction and we’d love to hear your thoughts too over at the  Attraction Checklist Facebook page at facebook.com/attractionchecklist..  Also, this is a binaural recording, so if you have headphones, put them on now as we climb aboard our taxi to experience Monster’s Inc. Mike and Sulley to the rescue!

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror – Disney California Adventure – Attraction Checklist #004

July 28, 2016 | 0 Comments

AC_EPISODE_004SmallIt’s time to drop in on the Tower of Terror at Disney California Adventure before it is lost in the Twilight Zone forever!  Ride along with Grant and hear his thoughts on this classic California Adventure attraction and it’s proposed (now confirmed) update to Guardians of the Galaxy BREAKOUT!

Binaural audio recorded on July 14, 2016, front row.

INTRO TRANSCRIPT

Welcome to Attraction Checklist.

This episode takes us to Disney California Adventure to take one last ride on The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.

Located in the Hollywood Land section of the park, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is described in the guide map by saying Drop In if you Dare and take the elevator ride of your life!  Guests must be 40” or taller to ride and this is a FastPass attraction.  The Thrill Lever describes the ride as Loud, Dark, Scary, and a Thrill Ride with Big Drops.  All of those things are certainly true.

Before we take our service elevator ride, let’s check out five fast facts about The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.

  1. The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror opened at Disney California Adventure on May 5, 2004.  Following in the footsteps of the version of the attraction in Florida at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the attraction in California used updated technology and a streamlined load system that moves guests through quicker.
  2. The Storyline of the attraction sets the date as October 31, 1939 and to guests who enter the Hollywood Tower Hotel, it appears as if the hotel has become frozen in time on that night.
  3. The clip of Rod Serling that is shown in the Library pre-show area is from the Twilight Zone episode It’s A Good Life, the voice of Rod Serling, who passed away in 1975 is provided by Mark Silverman.
  4. Spread throughout the queue of the attraction are several easter egg style reference to the original Twilight Zone television series.  These include the fortune telling machine from the episode Nick
  5. On July 23, 2016, Disney and Marvel announced that the The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is going to be transformed into Guardians of the Galaxy Breakout in an attraction that will debut in Summer of 2017.  When the audio for this episode was recorded, this was all still a rumor but I still touch on it in my thoughts on the attraction after the ride audio.

Also, there is a little editing of the audio during this episode to help cut down on your wait tim to board the attraction.  Don’t fear though, I’ve left in all the good stuff.  After the ride audio, I share my thoughts on the attraction and I’d love to hear YOUR thoughts on it as well over at the  Attraction Checklist Facebook page at facebook.com/attractionchecklist..  Once again, this is a binaural recording, so if you have headphones put them on now because we are about to experience, Disney California Adventure’s Twilight Zone Tower of Terror!
